Central Pacific - Paradise Islands

Some of the best opportunities to get the most out of Costa Rica's sun and sand, lay off the Pacific coast, Two small islands on this side of the country are bathed by clear blue water, and come alive with the vibrant energy of nature.

The place for turtles

If it is soft, white sand and a clear ocean you're looking for, Isla Tortuga (Turtle island) is the place for you.

Located in the Gulf Nicoya, just two miles offshore, this island paradise makes for a perfect day trip form San Jose, Puntarenas, or other beach towns nearby. To get there, an open boat or catamaran, slips between other small islands until it reaches the coconut palm fringed beach and turquoise waters of the state-owned Tortuga.

Covered in tropical dry forest, there's a 40 minute trail where hikers can observe strangler figs, bromeliads, orchids and fruit bearing trees like guanabana (soursop) and marañon (cashew). The trail leads to a spectacular lookout point.

Visitors can choose among a series of activities during their stay. Sea kayaking, swimming, snorkeling, lounging in the sun, exploring or playing some beach sport, will make for a busy and exciting day.

A natural phenomenon

A delicate strip of land, broken and separated from the mainland, is a short 3 miles before the town of Quepos. Damas Island can be reached by water or by land, crossing the narrow estuary that subtly sets this world apart from the rest.

On the island, animals live in their natural ways, since the environment has been well preserved. Exploring the territory is an opportunity for adventure. Several canals of calm waters are a must once you're here.

Tours can be easily arranged from Quepos or Manuel Antonio. Guides are usually locals who know the area well, and are friendly and enthusiastic to show others around. A relaxing day on the beach of Tortuga Island, or an encounter with nature in Damas Island; you choose how to be a part of Costa Rica's splendid Central Pacific region.

A word of advice: Traveling along ocean waters can be deceiving. The breeze keeps you cool, but the sun's rays can still be quite strong. Don't forget to bring along a hat and enough sun block.
